Resources for parents to help their kids cure the boredom

I'm sure everyone is sick of all the talk about the coronavirus (COVID-19) I know I am. So instead of a post going off about that. While you are stuck in doors, instead of binging on Television like my child above. Here are some great resources and fun things for everyone in your home to enjoy!

Big Life Journal

We are BIG fans of the BIG Life Journal community. they aren’t just about journals, they have lots of fun printables and activities for you and your children to enjoy. They are very positive and growth mindset based. If you sign up for their email list, every Friday you will receive a FREE printable activity. Right now they are having 50% off all of their printables when you use the code STUCKHOME.

We went crazy one day and bought out everything in the store. It is such great knowledge! We learn a lot as well while teaching our children and having fun. They also have a podcast that you can listen to for free. It is very engaging. Both my 10 yr old and 5 yr old love it. You can find the link to the podcast and the store below. https://biglifejournal.com/

EPIC!

We love reading! We have so many books, and yet we still find ourselves going out to the library often. Epic! is An app that has over 35,000 books for every age. They have books that will also read to your child. Who doesn’t love an interactive book, that your child can’t ruin by ripping out pages and coloring it.

Epic is a subscription app. It is $7.99 USD per month, but new users get 30 days for free and you can cancel anytime! After certain books it also offers a quiz to see if your child can remember what they read.

PBS Kids Learning

Who didn’t love PBS Kids while growing up? I would always run home to watch my favorite shows after school. My kids have shared my love for this as well. PBS has been so kind to offer the public free resources and learning videos to help your kids learn while out of school. They have great Educational videos and activities. click on the link below to check it out. https://www.pbslearningmedia.org/

Can you tell I love educational resources for my babies? Those are my top tried and true go tos. So now on to fun and crafty things that we like to do!

LETS GET CRAFTY

  1. Paper snowflakes (If you live in Idaho it’s still practically winter time, so it works)

  2. Sock Puppets. It is the silliest thing that makes my kids so happy. We make sock puppies with googly eyes, felt ears, and use permanent markers for spots. Then put on a puppet show!

  3. dry erase boards and chalk boards are always a hit

  4. Make a collage with pictures from the internet or from magazines and create vision boards. Or you can create a scrapbook with family photos

  5. do a time capsule for the year. Decorate a box and have everyone in your family put something in it. don’t forget to add pictures of everyone and have everyone write about their favorite things. Then bury it, or tape it up really good and set a date years from now to reopen it together.

  6. Paint rocks, or do a nature scavenger hunt outside in your yard. Have your kids look for rocks, leaves, sticks, just simple things to keep them occupied. Have them specify certain colors outside with things as well. Make it a learning experience.

  7. Make paper Airplanes

(link below to our personal favorite)

8. Make a Mask We love dressing up and getting creative with our looks. As much as I dislike face masks (Minus makeup of course) my kids LOVE them beyond belief. So here is a website with free face masks that you can print in color, or leave them blank and design them. Then print them off and use pipe cleaners, string, yarn, tape or whatever else you have lying around the house to make them stick to your face. Then dress up and have a masked dance party! https://maskspot.com/

9. PLAY-DOUGH

This is our all time favorite playdough recipe. Although I’m boring and don’t like my kids mixing colors, so I will quadrupole the recipe and only do one solid color. Then we store it in a tupperware container and as long as we put it away after every use, it has lasted us over a year. I have been very impressed! My kids only complaint is that it stinks. So drop some essential oil in there or mist it with Febreeze and that problem is quickly solved!

10. sidewalk chalk

11. Origami and balloon animals (you can YouTube beginner videos for both of these)

KIDS AT PLAY

  1. Building with Legos

  7. Make a treasure map, and create a treasure hunt

  8. record yourself and make a movie (if you have an iPhone you can use the iMovie app and do sound effects) my nieces and nephews do this for hours and it’s entertaining to watch!

  9. Indoor bowling - you can use paper towels, cups, toilet paper rolls, and use a ball or a round fruit as your ball.

  10. Set up dominoes

  11. play in the mud, make mud pies get dirty and take a bubble bath. Don’t forget the bath toys!

  12. jump on the trampoline

  13. create an obstacle course

  4. Listen when someone is talking to you, try to look them in the eyes and smile

  5. FaceTime or Skype or Marco Polo (free app) someone you miss and don’t see very often

  6. When you are angry at a family member, walk away and hang out in your room to collect your thoughts so you don’t say something that can hurt them. or count backwards from 10 in your head before you respond.

  7. say something positive to yourself out loud when you wake up in the morning and say something positive to each family member you see that day. Do the same thing that night.
